Today in the One Year Bible we read from Matthew 9:1-17. Jesus calls a tax collector to become one of His closest followers. And in His day, tax collectors were even more hated than the IRS is today. They collected for the Roman government and were notorious for skimming off the top. When He called Matthew, he followed Him. Matthew invited Him to his home and other notorious sinners came too. The religious leaders gossiped and couldn't believe Jesus was associating with sinners. Jesus told them (and us) that sick people are the ones who need doctors.
And the fact is that we are all sick and need doctors. We have all sinned and need Him to rescue us from our sins. But some of us, like the religious leaders, don't see our deep need. So we miss out on the healing that we need to live forever.
Let's take our sickness to the doctor and be deeply healed. Then we can help other sick people find Him too.
God, thanks for reminding us that we're sick so we'll come to the doctor and get the healing we so desperately need.
