embarrassing heroes

We read these verses today in the One Year Bible reading:

1 KINGS 5:1-6:38
ACTS 7:1-29
PSALM 127:1-5
PROVERBS 16:28-30

In Acts, Stephen is telling us the story of Moses. At one point, Moses kills an Egyptian and hides the body in the sand. When it becomes apparent that people know what he did, he runs away to Midian and has kids there. Not exactly hero material, right? And we've already talked and Peter denying Jesus in His time of greatest need. And then there's David, who ran off from Israel and joined the Philistines, his enemy. What's up with all these Bible heroes?

They're people like you and me. They do dumb things. They get scared and run away. They make choices that hurt themselves.

But they have faith in God. Even though they blow it time and again, they keep doing what God tells them to, and they end up as heroes in the Bible.

Have you blown it? Done something embarrassing? Ran away scared? Don't worry, you're in good company. We all screw up sometimes. God is great and has amazing grace and mercy. He'll forgive you and bring you back, over and over. Just ask him.

God, thanks for putting up with embarrassing people like us.
