too small a thing

We read these verses today in the One Year Bible:

2 SAMUEL 15:23-16:23
JOHN 18:25-19:22
PSALM 119:113-128
PROVERBS 16:10-11

In John, we read about Jesus's crucifixion. Pilate hung a sign over Jesus on the cross that said "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews". This is often represented by the initials INRI, which stands for Iesus Nazarenus, Rex Iudeam. The religious leaders protested that Pilate should change it, saying that Jesus only CLAIMED to be the king of the Jews. Pilate said "what I've written, I've written".

The cool thing about this is that the sign only pointed to Jesus being the savior of the house of Israel (the Jews). But in reality, the work that Jesus willingly chose to do on the cross that Friday did far more than just save the Jews. It would have been too small a thing for Him to only save the Jews. The sign should have read "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Universe". Because not only did Jesus die to redeem ALL of us humans, not just the Jewish ones, but He redeemed the whole universe from the fallen condition it was in due to the fall from grace in the garden of Eden.

Jesus died to redeem YOU from your sins and bring you to heaven to be with Him. Have you started following Him yet? If you do, He'll give you a better life than you can imagine.

God, thank You for redeeming the whole universe. Please help us follow You.
