Today we look at these verses in the One Year Bible:
Joshua 24:1-33
Luke 21:1-28
Psalm 89:38-52
Proverbs 13:20-23
Let's look at Luke. Jesus notices a widow giving two small coins in the Temple. He tells His disciples that she has given much more than anyone else because they all gave from their surplus, while she gave all she had.
On the surface, this story can be perplexing. Does God want us to take all of the money we have and give it to the church? Leaving us unable to pay our bills or buy food? I don't think that's the point.
This widow gave everything she had. It wasn't much, but it was her all. And that's what God is asking each of us to give. Not all of our money - all of us. He wants us to give everything we've got for His kingdom - helping where we can, loving those we're able, teaching people when possible. It might be that we don't have much. I might not be a great teacher. You might not be a great cook. But that's OK. Like GK Chesterton said, "Anything worth doing is worth doing badly."
So give it your all. Go give everything you've got. You're not responsible for it being much or little. Just give it all - and He will be pleased with what you've given.
God, thanks for teaching us how to give.
