wine to gladden our hearts: One Year Bible Reading for November 1

Today we read from these verses in the One Year Bible:

Ezekiel 1:1-3:15
Hebrews 3:1-19
Psalm 104:1-23
Proverbs 26:24-26

Let's look at the Psalm. David tells us that God has given us "wine to gladden our hearts, oil to brighten our faces, and bread to sustain our hearts." I've mentioned in previous blogs that the Bible tells us not to get drunk. That overdoing our alcohol consumption is a sin.

But the Bible also tells us, here and in the New Testament, that God has given us wine and that we should enjoy it. Paul says to take a little for your stomach's sake, which makes it sound medicinal. But here in the Psalm, it's clearly stated that it's to "gladden our hearts".

So, as with almost everything, do it in moderation. Don't drink TOO much and get drunk. But have some wine. It'll gladden your heart.

God, thanks for giving us things to make us glad.
