why we love God: One Year Bible Reading for November 17

Today we read these verses in the One Year Bible:

Ezekiel 35:1-36:38
James 1:1-18
Psalm 116:1-19
Proverbs 27:23-27

Let's look at the Psalm. The writer, probably David, says, "I love the Lord, for He heard my voice." And that's the way many of us come to know Him for the first time. We pray and we find that He really is listening and hears our prayer.

Some folks don't believe in God, or are mad at God, because they prayed and what they asked for (usually the healing of a sick family member) didn't happen. They turn their backs on Him and refuse to love Him or in some cases even believe He exists. And that's hard, and we can understand why they'd feel that way. We should pray for them.

But God is still listening. He hears your prayers. Sometimes the answer is "no", at least the way we asked. Not every sick person is going to get well. Not every injured person is going to survive. Sometimes people die. And we have to realize that that isn't the end. That's only the beginning for them. And it can be the beginning of our faith, too. If we trust Him even when it's hard.

God, thanks for always hearing us. We pray for those who were hurt when Your answer was "no."
