the root of all kinds of evil: One Year Bible Reading for November 16

Today we read these verses in the One Year Bible:

Ezekiel 33:1-34:31
Hebrews 13:1-25
Psalm 115:1-18
Proverbs 27:21-22

Let's look at Hebrews. First, let's clear up a common misunderstanding. The Bible does not say that money is the root of all evil. It doesn't even say that the LOVE of money is the root of all evil. It says (in another verse) that the love of money is the root of all KINDS of evil. There are definitely plenty of evils that don't involve money.

But money can definitely cause problems in your life! If you look at the lives of people who have won the lottery, you see that dropping wealth into someone's life almost always messes it up. If you look at the children of the very wealthy, you see that it's difficult for those accustomed to wealth to become good people. It's not impossible - with God all things are possible. And we see many saints who grew up rich - and usually gave away all or almost all of their wealth.

Today's verse says, "Keep your lives free from the love of money, and be content with what you have." Jesus said the same thing to a Roman soldier who asked what he should do. "Be content with your wages."

Be content! Don't be envious of what everyone else has. Be happy with what He's given you.

God, thanks for reminding us to be content and not love money.
