how to stop sinning: One Year Bible Reading for November 21

Today we read from these verses in the One Year Bible:

Ezekiel 42:1-43:27
James 5:1-20
Psalm 119:1-16
Proverbs 28:6-7

Let's look at the Psalm. It says, "Your word I have hidden in my heart so that I might not sin against You."

That's how to stop sinning! Just hide His word in your heart, and you'll be sin free for life.

Or maybe... that's just the first step. See, being free from sin is a process, and it usually takes our entire lives. For many, probably most, maybe ALL, people, it also involves a little time AFTER this life in purgatory becoming completely free from sin.

The church teaches that there are two things we can do to move along more quickly on the path of learning to be sinless: one is to suffer. I don't know about you, but I don't like suffering. So I was happy to learn that there's a second option, and the more we practice option two, the less we have to do option one. Option two is to spend time with the Eucharist. That means going to mass - daily mass whenever you can - and maybe spending some extra time in Eucharistic adoration. The more time we spend with Jesus, in other words, the less we have to suffer to become sinless.

And only sinless people go to heaven... so we probably wanna get started on that now. Incidentally, another great way to work on getting rid of our sins is to go to confession. "Confess your sins to one another and pray for each other, that you'll be healed," says the Bible in James 5:16.

God, thanks for giving us four great ways to weed out those pernicious sins.
