what God wants: One Year Bible Reading for October 18

Today we read from these verses in the One Year Bible:

Jeremiah 31:27-32:44
1 Timothy 3:1-16
Psalm 88:1-18
Proverbs 25:20-22

Let's look at Jeremiah. It gives us an insight into what God wants. Now, by "wants" I don't mean that He needs anything or is lacking something. He is complete and needs nothing. He doesn't "want" anything in the sense that Psalm 23 uses the word "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want." That "want" means "need". But Jeremiah gives us insight into what God desires.

He desires for us to be His people, and for Him to be our God! He desires for us to KNOW Him. He desires for us to love Him and to love other people. He posits this as what He's going to do with the people of Israel going forward (from the time of Jeremiah). He will write His law on their hearts, so that they will all automatically know Him and can therefore love Him.

That's what He wants for me and you, too. He HAS written His law on our hearts. As much as many people today try to pretend that they DON'T know, they do. None of us have excuses. We KNOW that God is there and that He loves us. And we can and should love Him in response to His tremendous love for us.

Let's share God's desire with those in our lives today.

God, thanks for showing us what You want!
