reaping what we sow: One Year Bible Reading for September 21

Today we read from these verses in the One Year Bible:

Isaiah 37:1-38:22
Galatians 6:1-18
Psalm 65:1-13
Proverbs 23:24

Let's look at Galatians. This is a famous verse: Do not be deceived; God cannot be mocked. We will reap what we sow. In case you wonder what that means, it's actually pretty simple.

It means that if you plant tomato seeds, you're going to get a tomato plant. If you plant sunflower seeds, you'll be enjoying sunflowers. You "reap" (harvest) what you "sow" (plant).

Now let's apply this to our lives. First, Paul is saying that if we "sow" good works, like helping the poor and giving to those in need (which Jesus made abundantly clear is VERY important and determines our eternal destination), we will "reap" good rewards - eternal life and rewards in heaven.

If we "sow" evil and sin in this life, doing everything for selfish reasons and hurting people instead of helping them, we will "reap" bad things in eternity - maybe just a very small reward, maybe no reward at all.

But it also applies to our daily lives. If you "sow" working out regularly, eating healthy, reading good books, and getting a healthy amount of sleep, your body will be healthy and strong and you will be happier and enjoy your life more. If you sit on the couch all day eating junk food and watching reality TV, you will spiral down into sluggishness and depression.

What will you sow today?

God, thanks for teaching us that what we plant is what we will harvest.
