fear not: One Year Bible Reading for September 28

Today we read from these verses in the One Year Bible:

Isaiah 54:1-57:14
Ephesians 6:1-24
Psalm 70:1-5
Proverbs 24:8

Let's look at Isaiah. The prophet Isaiah is telling the women of Israel not to worry and that God is going to bless them and their children.

But the verse I want to focus on is 54:4. Do not be afraid. The Bible tells us that over and over and over. Fear not. Don't be afraid. Be anxious for nothing.

Does that mean that bad things won't happen? Of course not. Bad things will happen. But God is with us. The wisdom here is encapsulated in the verse: "In this world you WILL have trouble. But take heart. He has overcome the world."

Things will go wrong. We'll lose jobs and loved ones. We'll get sick and eventually we'll die.

But that's not the end of the story. That's only the beginning. If you're feeling anxious or fearful, read this verse slowly and do what it says: Be anxious for nothing, but in EVERYTHING by prayer and asking God for help, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God which passes all understanding will guard your heart and mind through Christ Jesus.

God, thanks for teaching us over and over not to be afraid.
