No Good Apart from God: One Year Bible Reading for July 20

Today we read from these verses in the One Year Bible:

2 Chronicles 1:1-3:17
Romans 6:1-23
Psalm 16:1-11
Proverbs 19:20-21

Let's look at the Psalm. The writer says something very profound in the second verse: "You are my Lord: Apart from You I have no good thing."

There is much for us to learn from this short little verse. First, we absolutely MUST seek God first and let Him bless us with the blessings He chooses, rather than try to choose our own good things and then try to get God to bless them. "Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you." But the gospel also tells us, "Apart from Him we can do nothing." So we need to seek Him first!

But another thing we can learn is that the people in this world who do NOT put God first are not going to act nicely. Why should we expect people who are cut off from the source of all goodness, peace, patience, kindness, meekness, self-control.... to have any of those characteristics? Of course they won't. We should expect that. And, of course, we should pray that they find Him.

God, thanks for reminding us that apart from You, we have no good thing.
