Better to Be Poor Than a Liar: One Year Bible Reading for July 21

Today we read from these verses in the One Year Bible:

2 Chronicles 4:1-6:11
Romans 7:1-13
Psalm 17:1-15
Proverbs 19:22-23

Let's look at the proverb. There is one short little sentence in today's proverb that is very profound. It's only seven words, but it could change your life.

The writer of proverbs tells us, "Better to be poor than a liar." Does that mean we HAVE to lie in order to become rich? I wouldn't call it an absolute requirement, but when you look at the wealthy people of the world, it does seem to be the usual path.

Sometimes telling the truth means missing out on opportunities for advancement, doesn't it? How many careers have been ruined because the person spoke the truth and refused to repeat the popular lie? How many politicians or actors would be where they are today if they'd never lied?

Better to be poor than a liar. Let's take those words to heart today, and make choices that are true - even if they mean not becoming famous or rich or influential.

God, thanks for teaching us simple and profound truths.
