love > faith: One Year Bible Reading for July 31

Today we read from these verses in the One Year Bible:

2 Chronicles 29:1-36
Romans 14:1-23
Psalm 24:1-10
Proverbs 20:12

Let's look at Romans. Here we see a practical example... a LAB, if you will... in what it means for love to be greater than faith. We know this is true because 1 Corinthians 13 tells us so: "Now these three remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love."

And here in Romans we see this in practice. There were some people in the Rome community who thought that it was wrong to eat meat. They had weaker faith, Paul says, and therefore they only ate vegetables. Now, we're not going to get into a vegetarian or vegan argument here. The point is that the people with stronger faith knew it was OK to eat this meat, and the people with weaker faith thought they shouldn't. So what should happen here, according to Paul? Those with stronger faith should go ahead and eat the meat, right? Show those with lesser faith how it's done?

No.

Paul says that those with greater faith should be LOVING toward those with weaker faith, and not do things that will hurt the conscience of those with weaker faith. That's a great example of love being greater than faith. We see people with GREAT faith being kind to those with weaker faith in love.

Let's do likewise. When you talk to people who think it's wrong to do ABC, and you know that it's actually OK, be kind. In charity, don't flaunt your freedom. Love them, and don't hurt their conscience. Make sense?

God, thanks for teaching us that love is greater than faith.
