Today in the One Year Bible, we read from the following passages:
Genesis 42:18-43:34
Matthew 13:47-14:12
Psalm 18:16-36
Proverbs 4:7-10
And the verse in the gospel jumps out at me, and I'm not sure I've really noticed it before. Jesus says that every teacher of the law that has become a disciple of the kingdom of heaven (think about how He worded that) brings out new treasure along with old treasure.
Lots to ponder there. He's saying that many of the teachers of the law BECAME disciples of the kingdom of heaven. And then they taught Christianity and the gospel alongside the teachings of Judaism, which were fulfilled in Jesus. The new and the old.
That's what we have to be careful to do today. Not to toss out the old teachings just because He gives us new ones. To hold to the traditions that are passed down to us that are good and true and holy. It's easy to get caught up in what is new and interesting and fashionable, even in the church. But we need to remember the old treasure along with the new.
God, thanks for reminding us that all of Your treasure is worth holding on to.
