Today we read from the following passages in the One Year Bible:
Exodus 2:11-3:22
Matthew 17:10-27
Psalm 22:1-18
Proverbs 5:7-14
And the verse that I want to focus on today is Moses and the Hebrews. Moses sees an Egyptian beating a Hebrew worker and looks around to make sure no one sees what he's about to do, then kills the Egyptian and buries his body.
That's the hero of our story! That's the guy that all of Judaism looked up to for thousands of years. Crazy that the Bible records these embarrassing moments from the greatest heroes in its pages.
But that makes it all the more believable, right? It tells us it's true. Why would the Old Testament tell us embarrassing things about David, like Bathsheba, if it weren't true? Makes him look pretty bad. Why would the New Testament tell us that all of the disciples deserted Jesus in His greatest moment of need unless it were true?
Now let's look at our own lives. How much of your struggle do you share with others? Do you only share your wins and happy moments, or do you share your mistakes and dumb moments, too? Isn't it important for us to share the whole truth with people? I'm not talking about gory details. But if all we share with others is our glamorous vacations and happy Starbucks moments, they might get a sense that what we're sharing isn't entirely true. And they'd be right.
God, thanks for showing us by example that we need to share our struggles as well as our victories.
