Today we read the following passages in the One Year Bible:
Exodus 4:1-5:21
Matthew 18:1-20
Psalm 22:19-31
Proverbs 5:15-21
And the verses from Matthew leap out at me. The little ones. Who are they? Jesus tells us that we have to BECOME like these little ones to enter the kingdom of Heaven. And that if we cause one of these little ones to stumble, well... it won't be good.
So are "the little ones" just kids? I don't think so. I think the little ones are anyone who is ignored or neglected by the "big ones". The homeless. The mentally challenged. The very old, whose health is failing. AND the very young, who depend on us to keep them safe and to help them. We must BECOME like them in being humble and realizing our great need that only Jesus can fill. But we must also take care of them and not let the world stomp them down into the ground as it climbs to its heights of wealth and power.
God, thanks for reminding us of the little ones. And telling us to take care of them.
