Does God Speak in our Dreams?: One Year Bible Reading for January 9

Today in the One Year Bible we read from:

Genesis 20:1-22:24
Matthew 7:15-29
Psalm 9:1-12
Proverbs 2:16-22

And the verses that jump out at me are from Genesis. God speaks to Abimelek in a dream and tells him that his life is in danger because he has taken Abraham's wife. He basically SAVES Abimelek by telling him in his dream not to touch Sarah. And Abimelek isn't especially close to God in this story. But God cares about him anyway, and cares about Sarah as well.

Does God speak to us in our dreams? Do all of our dreams mean something? Aren't dreams just our subconscious "bubbling up"?

Well, there are lots of good answers to these questions. Yes, God does SOMETIMES speak to us in our dreams. He does so throughout both the Old and New Testaments, most notably to Joseph. He tells Joseph to take Mary and Jesus to Egypt to avoid being killed by Herod. And He warns the wise men not to go back the same way they came so they wouldn't be apprehended by Herod. He still speaks to us in our dreams today. SOMETIMES.

But not all of our dreams "mean something." That is, they're not all supernatural or God speaking. Some of them ARE just our brains continuing to work on things while we're asleep. Some of them give us solutions to real problems. There are mathematicians who have dreamed the answers to actual math problems.

But if you ASK God to speak to you in your dreams, who knows? He might just choose to. Just get ready, because He'll probably ask you to do something, and it probably won't be easy.

God, thanks for sometimes speaking to us in our dreams. Please give us wisdom to follow Your commands.
