Blessed John Duns Scotus: The Subtle Doctor

Today we celebrate Blessed John Duns Scotus. He was a Franciscan priest who had a brilliant mind. He taught theology and philosophy in various colleges. He defended the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception, which even the great St Thomas Aquinas attacked. He pointed out that Mary was saved from sin just like the rest of us, she was just saved from sin before she was born. Because of Jesus, Mary was born without original sin. His redemption redeemed her before she had a chance to sin.

His colleagues called him the subtle doctor because of the depth and intelligence of his teaching and writing. He also lived a very holy life and inspired many to live holy lives and study philosophy to defend the faith. You can read more about him here.

Whether you have a brilliant mind like John or are more of a dunce (see what I did there?), God is calling you to use your mind for Him. Sometimes (often) He delights in using the simple of this world (like Bernadette Soubirous or St Joseph of Cupertino) to confound those who think they're smarter than the rest of us.

God, thanks for the great example of this brilliant man, who used his mind to bring You glory. Blessed John Duns Scotus, pray for us.
