Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich: Temporary Stigmata

Today we celebrate Anne Catherine Emmerich. She was born in Germany in the 19th century, and wanted to become a nun from an early age. She was poor in money and in health, and it's sad to say that many convents refused to take her for those reasons. But she did finally join the Augustinian order, which subsequently dissolved from lack of support. She then went to work for a priest.

She had mystical visions in which Jesus appeared to her and told her things. A poet from nearby came and wrote many of these visions down, but we're not sure how much of his own thoughts he added. Anne received the stigmata, and doctors came to verify it was real. Then, after a few years, the stigmata went away. Anne spent her life in prayer and in service to the poor. You can read more about her here.

You can see that Anne faced many obstacles and setbacks in her life, but continued to serve Jesus without fail. How are we overcoming the obstacles we face in serving Him?

God, thanks for the great example and writings of this holy nun. Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich, pray for us.
