St Thomas More: A Brady Bunch for all Seasons

Today in the book In Caelo et in Terra, we read about St Thomas More. He is the subject of the great movie A Man for all Seasons, which you can watch here.

When he was young, he married a woman named Jane Colt. They had several children, and then Jane passed away. Thomas then married another woman who already had children, and they blended their families like the Brady bunch.

The Reformation swept Europe around this time, and both Thomas and the king of England resisted it. Until the king decided he wanted a divorce, so he threw out the Catholic church and formed his own church, which is where the Anglican (aka the Episcopal) church came from. Thomas More refused to go along with this, and the king had him martyred. Thomas was taken away to his cell as he watched his friends partying in a nearby building. He chose Jesus over the pleasure of being with his friends and enjoying life.

How does God ask YOU to put Him before your friends and your pleasure today?

God, thanks for the inspiring example of this godly man. St Thomas More, pray for us.
