St John Fisher: He Died for the Faith of the Holy Catholic Church

Today in the book In Caelo et in Terra, we read about St John Fisher. He was ordained as Bishop of England, and he was one of the very few people (along with St Thomas More) who stood up to King Henry VIII. He told the king that his marriage to his first wife was legitimate, which is NOT what the king wanted to hear. And then he refused, along with St Thomas More, to sign the Oath of Supremacy that established the Anglican church. He was condemned to death, sent to the tower of London, and sentenced to be hanged, drawn, and quartered. But his sentence was commuted to a simpler and quicker beheading. You can read more about him here.

Have you had to stand up for your faith even when others seem to have abandoned you? There are Christians all over the world today who are suffering just such a time right now. Keep them in your prayers.

God, thanks for the courageous example of this bishop (and, just before his death, cardinal). St John Fisher, pray for us.
