St Maria Guadalupe is the subject of our reading today in the book In Caelo et in Terra. When she was 23, she was engaged to be married. But God had been calling her to religious life for years, so she called off the marriage and became a nun.
Shortly after this, Mexico experienced a huge political upheaval which resulted in heavy persecution of Catholics. Many Catholics were martyred during this time. Of course, Madre Lupita (as she was affectionately known) helped Catholics, especially priests, who were hiding from the government at this time. But she also tended to those who were anti-Catholic but were wounded from the fighting going on in Mexico. She truly loved her enemies and helped them. You can read more about her here.
St Maria Guadalupe loved her enemies even when they threatened to kill her. How have you gone out of your way to love YOUR enemies?
God, thanks for the example of loving our enemies set by this remarkable woman. St Maria Guadalupe, pray for us.
