St Paula Montal Fornes: The Proper Education of Young Ladies

Today in the book In Caelo et in Terra, we read about St Paula Montal Fornes. She was from a town near Barcelona and was the oldest of five children. Her father passed away when she was very young and she had to forgo her childhood to help her mother provide for and raise the family. When she became an adult she joined a local order of religious sisters and formed schools for girls, to give them the education that she had missed. She believed that giving young girls a good education would give them better futures.

When she passed away the new order of schools she began for young woman had 19 schools and hundreds of workers, helping women to have better and brighter lives. You can read more about her here.

A couple take home lessons here: one, St Paula took the pain that she'd experienced in her young life and turned it into motivation to make sure other young women didn't suffer from the same problems she did. And second, she realized the important truth that education makes an enormous difference in people's lives, especially the lives of young girls, whose futures can be bleak and mandated to them without the freedom that education brings.

God, thanks for the example and work of this great saint. St Paula Montal Fornes, pray for us.
