St Vincent of Saragossa: The Instruments of His Torture

Today in the book In Caelo et in Terra, we read about St Vincent of Saragossa. You can read more about him here. He spoke on behalf of his bishop, who had a speech impediment, and was sentenced to death due to his speech to the Roman governor of Spain at the time.

He was brutally tortured by being burned with a grid iron and torn with hooks. He lived through that, after after converting his jailor he finally succumbed to his wounds.

After he died, his body and even the instruments of his torture were venerated as relics. That's pretty profound when you think about it.

Because we all suffer in this life, right? But God not only redeems us and our bodies, He even redeems the things that cause us pain, that make us suffer. When Jesus died on the cross, He redeemed the entire cosmos, not just human beings. And we continue to see the effects of that redemption throughout time, as more people are brought into His kingdom, and even the things used against us being redeemed and used for His glory.

God, thanks for the powerful example of this saint. St Vincent of Saragossa, pray for us.
