Today we read about a wonderful saint in the little book In Caelo et in Terra. St Marianne Cope was born in Germany, but moved to New York with her family when she was young. She felt God calling her to religious life, so she gladly accepted and became a very successful educator, served as principal, and founded some of the first hospitals in New York.
God then called her to Hawai'i, and she moved there. She realized that this calling would probably result in her death, since the part of Hawai'i where she was going, Molokai, was a leper colony. She counted the cost of being Jesus's disciple and said yes. She met St Damien, who died shortly after she arrived. She carried on his work, ministering to the poor lepers of Molokai for the next thirty years, before passing away of old age. Her last years were spent in a wheelchair, working tirelessly to help those in need. You can read more about her here.
God, thank You for calling us, like you called this beautiful saint, to count the cost and follow You. St Marianne Cope, please pray for us.
