Today we read about St Hilary of Poitiers in the little book In Caelo et in Terra. What an interesting saint! First of all, he grew up as a pagan, and a really popular one. When he converted to Christianity, which he did after simply reading the Scriptures, he was asked to become the local Bishop!
He was exiled for refusing to agree with the emperor at the time, who was a public supporter of Arianism, which was an early heresy that denied that Jesus was both fully man and fully divine. While he was exiled, he made good use of his time by writing 12 books. His books refuted Arianism, and did it so well that Sulipicius Severus (what a great name!) said that St Hilary saved all of France from the error of Arianism. Read more about him here.
Just think about the power of the Bible. Just reading it saved this man and gave us a saint who was later declared a Doctor of the church! Have you read your Bible today? It has the exact same power today that it had back in the 4th century.
God, thanks for the wonderful example of this very interesting saint. St Hilary of Poitiers, please pray for us.
