My heart is broken by the story of today's saint, which we read in the book In Caelo et in Terra. This little girl was protected by her loving mom, who made some very sad decisions in order to take care of her and her family. When Laura's father died, her mother moved the family to another country and looked for work, but found a violent man who took her in as his mistress. She agreed to this in order to protect her family. The violent man also made sexual advances toward Laura, who refused. He beat her so severely that she eventually died.
This sounds like a horrible story with no redeeming qualities. But little Laura prayed and offered her life to God in return for saving her mom from the evil life that she'd fallen into. When her mom found out about this, Laura's death prompted her to leave the life with the violent man and to live a better, more wholesome life. You can read more about her here.
The whole story is still very sad. But we remember that no matter how bad things are in this life, God will give (and to Laura has already given!) a reward so great in heaven that the things we suffer here in this life will seem like nothing.
God, thanks for the sad and inspiring example of this little girl. Bl Laura Vicuna, pray for us.
