trust makes or breaks you

Today in the One Year Bible, we read from Hosea 4:1-5:15. In this passage, we read that God isn't happy with Israel because they have been making vows and breaking them, killing, stealing, and committing adultery. When you think about each of these things, they all boil down to one thing: betrayal of trust. Right? You make a vow and the person trusts you, then you betray their trust and break the vow. Someone trusts you with their life when they're near you, and you kill them. They trust you not to take what belongs to them, and you break their trust by stealing. And they trust you to respect their marriage vows and you break them. So many sins come down to breaking trust.

That's why it's so important to be trustworthy. If you struggle with being a trustworthy person, ask God to help you. He will teach you the value of keeping your word, and being someone that people know they can trust.

Back in the day, a person's name was a symbol of their trustworthiness. If someone had a good name, they could borrow huge sums of money or do very dangerous things because people knew they were good for it. They were trustworthy. Today we have credit card companies and credit scores that tell other people whether they can trust us or not. Let's strive to be the kind of person where our word is our bond, and our name means something.

God, thanks for teaching us how important trust is. Help us to learn to be worthy of trust.
