can't even be a slave
Today in the One Year Bible, we read from Deuteronomy 28:1-68. God is telling the Hebrews what will happen to them if they do what He says, and what will happen to them if they don't.
He makes it very clear that He is very merciful and loving, and wants them to do His will so they can be happy. But if they don't... it won't end well for them.
He says, at the end of the long list of terrible things that will happen if they disobey Him, that they will offer themselves to be slaves, but no one will buy them.
Isn't that embarrassing? To not even be worth being a slave. You might remember from the Chronicles of Narnia that Eustace was sold into slavery, and no one would buy him. The auctioneer even offered to throw him in with another purchase and no one would have him.
It's good for us to remember today that God still stands ready to bless our lives if we follow Him. And humiliation awaits anyone who doesn't.
God, thanks for teaching us the value of doing Your will.... and the repercussions when we don't.
