the heart of the fire

Today we read from Deuteronomy 5:1-6:25 in the One Year Bible. Moses tells the Hebrews that God has spoken to them from the "heart of the fire." And that phrase alone is enough for us to ponder tonight.

It so typifies who God is. He is kind and caring and gentle and good and patient. These are the attributes of love, and we know that God is love.

But He is also fire. He is all consuming fire, and His love consumes us and our lives and makes them holy and pure. He burns away the dross that we accumulate from too much luxury, and He makes us into the saints that He created us to be.

So He is a heart. And He is of fire. It's best for us to remember that He is both.

God, thanks for being a heart of fire. Please draw us closer into Your purifying love.
