Moses and Jesus
Today in the One Year Bible, we read from Numbers 11:24-13:33. Moses assembles his 70 elders, and then the Spirit of God rests on them and they prophesy. This is so clearly an image or foreshadowing of Jesus giving His disciples the Holy Spirit that it brings to mind all of the ways that Moses and Jesus were similar. Jesus, in a very real way, was a Moses figure... but the fulfillment of his role.
But if we take a step back and look at the whole picture, we see something else that's pretty amazing. Moses is to Jesus what the Old Testament is to the New Testament. The New Testament (and Jesus's teachings) are the Old Testament revealed. The Old Testament (and Moses's teachings) are the New Testament concealed. St Augustine said that, and you can read more about it here.
That's why it's so important for us to read BOTH testaments. The complement one another perfectly, and give us great insight and wisdom when we apply their teachings to one another. Jesus would often say, "You've heard ABC... but I tell you XYZ," which perfectly completes and fulfills the ABC that Moses taught.
So let's spend time in both the Old and New Testament. That's one of many ways that God can give us wisdom, which we all lack and need to ask for.
God, thanks for giving us such an amazing book. Please speak to our lives through it.
