holy means separated

Today in the One Year Bible, we read from Numbers 8:1-9:23. Moses takes the Levites and separates them from the rest of the Hebrews, washing them and laying hands on them to make them ceremonially clean. In a word, he made them holy.

This holiness meant separated from everyday life. From the contaminants of sin and selfishness. We can learn a good lesson from this, and separate ourselves from the sinfulness of the world.

But an even better lesson is to remember WHY God did this. Not just for the purpose of separation. The point was to bring everyone back into relationship with Him again.

When we pursue holiness... it's very important to remember that the point of it all is love. God IS love. And He's continually reaching out to us sinful humans to bring us back to Him. When He makes us holy, He separates us from the sinful world... but it's for the purpose of sending us back INTO that world to bring them to Him.

God, thanks for reminding us of the whole point of being holy.

This is wonderful insight! A reminder that every decision God makes is rooted and founded in love and restoration of relationship to Him. So good!
