beautiful and elaborate

Today in the One Year Bible, we read about God giving Moses directions on how to make the vestments that are to be worn by the priests. They are very beautiful and elaborate, and we read about them in Exodus 28:1-43.

We realize upon reading this that God DOES want us to make beautiful things, even clothes. There is a temptation among some elements of Christianity, both Catholic and Protestant, to eschew beauty and embrace the plain and even the ugly. I've read a story of a particular man who was striving for holiness who would avoid looking at a certain lake when he passed by so as to deprive himself of the beauty of the scene. And there IS a place for denial of pleasure in the Christian life, for a PURPOSE. Not to deny ourselves the beauty of God's creation for no reason. God gave us beautiful and amazing things and the senses to enjoy them for a reason.

God, thanks for giving us beauty and the ability to enjoy it.
