Jesus above all else

Today in the One Year Bible, we read from Colossians 2:8-23. Paul reminds us that Jesus has to remain first in our lives. That means above all else, including of course money and possessions and friends and family and job. But it also means He must remain above the Bible, above our church, above our relationship with Him, above our understanding of Him, above what we think He's telling us to do.

How does that play out in our lives? Well, it means that we don't allow one verse of the Bible to twist our understanding of Him. It means we don't let our church commitments come between us and Him. It means we don't put "our relationship with Him" above helping others (in whose faces we find Him.) It means we don't allow our understanding of Him to prevent Him from working in our lives in a way we're not used to or comfortable with. It means realizing that He's not a tame lion, and He has to be free to work in our lives HIS way.

God, thanks for showing us that we must keep Jesus first.
