the power of stories
Today in the One Year Bible, we learn something about the power of stories. We read from Acts 13:16-41. Paul tells the story of the children of Israel in Egypt, and how God delivered them from Pharaoh. And of course, this story instills in the listeners the power of God, even over the most powerful men in the world.
But other stories are powerful too. Some are powerfully good. The story of the civil rights movement, and how a handful of brave people stood up to the generational reality of slavery, to finally overcome it (at least legally - we're still coming to terms with it in society, and in other countries), is a powerful and good story. The story of how God created the world and called it good tells us many things about the world around us, and our place in it. The story of end times, which we see painted in fantastic and mind boggling colors in the book of Revelation, is a good story that lets us know God is in control, and there will be goodness and meaning at the end of everything.
There are many stories in YOUR life, too. Stories of how He saved you from desperate times. How He led you to goodness and joy. All of the amazing things He's done for you in your life.
Don't forget to tell your story. Because there are bad stories out there, too (think: Jews aren't people, so we can kill them.) And it's important that we tell the true stories so they overpower the bad ones.
God, thanks for the power of stories. Help us tell them.
