eating from the tree of life
Today in the One Year Bible, we read from Revelations 2:1-17. John tells us that when Jesus appeared to him on Patmos, He told him that whoever is "victorious will eat from the tree of life."
You might remember from the story in Genesis, that Adam and Eve ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, and sin entered the world. After that, they were prevented from eating from the tree of life, or they would have lived in sin forever.
But once we have become "victorious" over sin, by receiving His redemption from our sins and dying in that condition one day, we will be ready for the first time to eat from that tree of life, and to live forever. That's fruit worth looking forward to.
In the meantime, let's share the good news that He is making us ready to receive it. And in response to His other words in tonight's reading... let's return to our "first love".
God, please help us discover our first love again, so we can get ready to receive the fruit from the tree of life.
