what little faith looks like

Today in the One Year Bible, we read from John 4:43-54. In that passage, Jesus encounters a man who asks for his son to be healed. And Jesus's reply is not what we might expect. He says, "Will you never believe in me unless you see miraculous signs and wonders?" And then, of course, He heals the man's son.

But if we take a step back and listen to what Jesus is saying... we realize what is most important. The things we ask for from God - wealth, health, nice houses, etc. - these are not what matter ultimately. We will lose our wealth eventually, and our health will give out. We don't get to hold onto things. We have to let it all go eventually. But what matters - in the end - is that we believe in Him. That's what He's asking us to do. Without needing to see miracles to prove that we can trust Him. This is what real faith looks like.

Now, the man who came to Jesus and asked for his son to be healed had faith. He had a little faith, enough to get him to ask Jesus for help. When Peter got out of the boat and walked to Jesus on the water, he had faith too. In fact, he probably had more faith than the rest of us. But even still, Jesus asked him why he doubted, and said, "O ye of little faith." THAT'S little faith!

But great faith is when we don't need miracles, but we trust Him anyway. That's the faith He's looking for.

God, help us trust You without needing You to prove anything to us.
