we are far too easily pleased
Today in the One Year Bible, we read from Luke 9:7-27. Jesus asks who the apostles say He is, and Peter replies, "You are the Messiah, sent from God." And he was right, and Jesus told him that he spoke correctly, since God revealed it to him.
But he had no idea what he was saying, right? Peter thought the Messiah was going to be a political leader who would throw off the shackles of the hated Roman rule and make Israel into its own nation again, probably killing the Romans in the process. But Jesus had much, MUCH bigger plans, which we celebrate tomorrow. Jesus planned to change the whole world, overthrowing sin and death, and bringing eternal life to everyone who follows Him. Peter had NO IDEA what that meant. The disciples even argued and debated among themselves about what Jesus meant when He said He would die and rise again three days later.
We have the benefit of 20/20 hindsight to see what Jesus DID mean, and how His actions would change the world. But we don't have the benefit in our own lives, do we? We bumble along like the disciples did, misunderstanding what He's telling us, expecting little victories in our personal lives, money and health and food and sex (nothing wrong with any of those in themselves), when He wants to do something far bigger in our lives than we can imagine. As Lewis says so eloquently, we are far too easily pleased.
So in this Easter season, let's take a moment. Let's stop and reflect, and let God speak to our hearts, revealing to us not WHO Jesus is, because we know that already, but what He is doing in our lives. Like Peter, we can't see it based on our own wisdom or on what others tell us. We can only see what He's doing when we let Him reveal it to us. Then we see, little by little, as the pages of our lives turn one at a time, the incredible story He's writing.
God, speak to our hearts this Easter, and help us see what You're doing.
