Today we read from these verses in the One Year Bible:
1 Kings 5:1-6:38
Acts 7:1-29
Psalm 127:1-5
Proverbs 16:28-30
Let's look at Acts. Here we see Stephen standing before his accusers and telling them the gospel. And notice that he doesn't start with his own life or even with the life of Jesus. He gives a history of salvation. He goes way back to Abraham and tells them what God has done from the beginning until now.
Several things we can learn from this. One is that it's important for us to learn history, and to learn the Bible. When people attack us or our beliefs, we need to be able to defend our beliefs using history and using Biblical references. That will be much more convincing than just sharing our own story.
BUT. We should also share our own story, and not just what we've been taught in the church. We should share what God has done for us personally. You never know who might be listening and open to God using your story to draw them to Him. Just think: Stephen's words were recording 2000 years ago and we're reading them and learning from them today! Who knows how your words will carry to the next generation - especially today when we have smart phones and videos can go viral.
God, thanks for teaching us to use history, the Bible, and our own stories to share Your gospel with the world.
