The Lesson We Refuse to Learn: One Year Bible Reading for May 17

Today we read in the One Year Bible these verses:

1 Samuel 20:1-21:15
John 9:1-41
Psalm 113:1-114:8
Proverbs 15:15-17

Let's look at the Proverbs. We read, "Better is a little with fear of the Lord than great wealth with turmoil." And that's a lesson that humans seem to 100% refuse to learn. See, wisdom comes from learning from other people's mistakes. That's learning "the easy way". Learning "the hard way" is trying something even when you're told it won't work and finding out it won't work by getting hurt in the process.

SO MANY PEOPLE think that if they were wealthy, they'd be happy. Even though basically every wealthy person in the world tells us that they're not happy and many of them even end their lives out of the desperation of their unhappiness.

So my advice this morning is... learn this lesson the easy way. Money will NOT buy you happiness. A bigger house, nicer car, more jewelry, and more expensive food will not bring you joy.

Better is a little with fear of the Lord (in other words, while loving God and doing what He calls you to do) than great wealth (millions of dollars) with turmoil (all the grief and emptiness that comes with being rich).

God, thanks for teaching us that money won't buy us happiness.
