The Danger of Lies: One Year Bible Reading from May 22

Today we read these verses in the One Year Bible:

2 Samuel 1:1-2:11
John 12:20-50
Psalm 118:19-29
Proverbs 15:27-28

Let's look at 2 Samuel 1. This soldier comes to David and tells a lie. He wants glory and honor for killing Saul, who was trying to kill David throughout the entire book of 1 Samuel. David ran for his life for years as Saul pursued him, trying to kill him out of jealousy and envy. Saul of jealous of the throne he held and envious of the fame that David had in battle.

So this soldier comes and tells David that he killed Saul. This is a lie, because we know from reading 1 Samuel that Saul killed himself. But this soldier thinks that no one will know since the only other person there is now dead, so he tells David he did it. Well, David isn't pleased. The reason is because David realizes that Saul is God's anointed king over Israel. That's why he himself didn't kill Saul when he had the chance several times.

So David orders the soldier executed for killing God's anointed.

A warning to all of us that lies often have dangerous and unintended consequences.

God, thanks for teaching us that honesty is the best answer - even when it's dangerous, it's good danger.
