Is Getting Drunk Wrong?: One Year Bible Reading for May 21

Today we read from the One Year Bible in these verses:

1 Samuel 29:1-31:13
John 11:55-12:19
Psalm 118:1-18
Proverbs 15:24-26

Let's look at the Proverb. It says, "Folly brings joy to one who has no sense, but whoever has understanding keeps a straight course."

I drive Uber at night. I meet a ton of drunk people. And many of them are having fun. But I hear so many people say they wish they'd done something else with their weekend. That getting drunk and doing things they will later regret just feels empty and pointless.

It's not that getting drunk is some horrible evil thing that offends God. It's that it's "folly". The Bible clearly says NOT to get drunk on alcohol (BUT INSTEAD, it says, be filled with the Spirit of God! Which might make you act like you're a little tipsy sometimes, and very happy!)

So next time you're trying to decide what to do with your weekend, think about this advice from the writer of Proverbs. Folly (like getting plastered) brings joy (it'll seem fun at the time) to those who have no sense. But if you've got any understanding (act like you got some sense!), you'll keep a straight course (and do something fun AND meaningful with your time).

God, thanks for teaching us to avoid getting drunk so that we'll enjoy life MORE.
