So Very Humble: One Year Bible Reading for April 7

Today we read from these verses in the One Year Bible:

Deuteronomy 31:1-32:27
Luke 12:8-34
Psalm 78:32-55
Proverbs 12:21-23

Let's look at Deuteronomy. So Moses has been leading the children of Israel from Egypt, through the wilderness, and to the Promised Land. But just before he leads them INTO the Promised Land, he's told that he's not actually going to go. He's going to die before they get there.

And Moses shows the humility that he is (we know from his own writing) famous for. Now, all joking aside (and the jokes are great), we know that everything Moses wrote was inspired by God. So when he wrote that he was the most humble, he was writing with the same spiritual insight that he used when describing the creation of the world. It wasn't his idea. (It's still funny.)

But we SEE that humility here. Moses could have thrown a fit at this point. But he demonstrated a humility that we can all learn from. See, God does that. He brings you to a point where you COULD become someone big and famous and "important". But you see in SO MANY people's lives, especially the lives of saints, that He often sends something (or someone) to bring you back to your senses. To remind you that you're a human being. And, in the words of the inimitable CS Lewis, that is, "both honour enough to erect the head of the poorest beggar, and shame enough to bow the shoulders of the greatest emperor on earth. Be content."

Be content.

God, thanks for teaching us humility.
