Today in the One Year Bible, we read these verses:
Numbers 24:1-25:18
Luke 2:1-35
Psalm 59:1-17
Proverbs 11:14
And in Numbers, we are in the story of Balaam. The only way you've probably heard of Balaam (if you have) is because of his donkey. Isn't that remarkable? His donkey is more famous than he is! And that's because, according to the book of Numbers, his donkey talked to him.
Now, let's step back a second. Some people take this as a fanciful story or myth because it features a talking animal. And maybe it is. Our salvation doesn't depend on whether Balaam's donkey literally spoke human words or not. But if you read the passage carefully, it doesn't say that the donkey just started talking. Even if it did, there's no reason to rule it out as a possibility. But in this case, the Biblical author (probably Moses) clearly says that God GAVE the donkey the ability to speak. I think we can all agree that God can do whatever He wants to. He made donkeys. He made speech. If He decided to let ALL of the animals in the world start talking, He could.
The take away lesson today is: don't limit God. That applies to donkeys, and it applies to you, too. God can do anything. Nothing is impossible with God. Trust Him.
God, thanks for teaching us that all things are possible with You.
ps yes, I had to fight really hard not to make any ass jokes.
