Today we read from the following passages in the One Year Bible:
Exodus 21:22-23:13
Matthew 24:1-28
Psalm 29:1-11
Proverbs 7:6-23
And in the gospel, we read that the disciples get Jesus's attention and point out the buildings near the Temple. Jesus tells them, blowing their minds, that the Temple and all of the surrounding buildings will soon be destroyed, leaving not even one stone on top of another. And that is ONE thing for us to remember - this world is temporary. Don't get too attached to things - you will have to let them go. But what is waiting for us is so great that we can't even imagine it. We're told that literally. "Eye has not seen, and ear has not heard, what God has ready for those who love Him."
On the other hand, we should look at buildings like the one above (Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris) and realize that people have become Christians just from looking at the incredible beauty, wonder, and design in buildings like this one. Jesus said that if the crowd didn't praise Him when He entered Jerusalem, the "stones would cry out", and in beautiful buildings like this, we see the stones themselves crying out the beauty of God and His creation.
So on the one hand, let's make beautiful things and give God the glory. On the other, let's remember that they are temporary, and what's to come is completely inconceivable.
God, thanks for beauty, today and tomorrow.
