Today's saint of the day was a very interesting contradiction of terms. He was the pope! But he was very humble, down to earth, and reluctant to be in a position of power. Before he became pope, he was a humble monk and helped found many monasteries. But he lived during a very tumultuous time - during the repeated attacking and sacking of Rome. He helped keep the church together, and on track, during a time when the Roman empire - and most of the known world - was falling apart. He paved the way for the Middle Ages to be a time of richness and thriving for the church and its peoples. And he did it all as "a servant of the servants of God."
The world is going through a tumultuous time right now, as well. How is God calling YOU to help hold things together? What will future generations remember you for?
God, thanks for the great example of this humble and exemplary pope. St Gregory the Great, pray for us.
Oh yeah, you can read more about him here.
