Today we read In Caelo et in Terra about St Maria Josefa Sancho de Guerra. From a very young age, Maria felt that God was calling her to religious life. She tried to enter a monastery, but illness prevented her. Eventually she founded a new order that ministered to sick and homebound people along with several other sisters. She was sick herself for much of her life, but soldiered on and encouraged everyone she met to move closer to Jesus - to become more intimate with Him. You can read more about her here.
During my time in the Jesuits, my spiritual director often encouraged me to do the same thing. In all of my lectio divina contemplative prayer, he told me over and over again to "get closer to Jesus." That was invaluable advice, and led to some amazing prayer experiences and a closeness to Jesus today that I never had before.
So along with my spiritual director and with St Maria Josefa, I encourage YOU to move closer to Jesus. Seek Him and ask Him to come closer to you.
Your life will never be the same.
God, thanks for the great example and admonition of this woman who was heralded as a saint even before she died. St Maria Josefa Sancho de Guerra, pray for us.
