St Oscar Romero: Modern Hero Martyr Saint

Today we celebrate a true hero of the faith as we read about him in the book In Caelo et in Terra. His name is St Oscar Romero. He lived in El Salvador in the early part of the 20th century. He was a priest and eventually a bishop. He spoke out against corruption and spoke up for the poor. This made him enemies among the powerful, and eventually his enemies shot him through the heart as he celebrated mass. Of course, being martyred while saying mass is a great way for a priest to go straight to heaven, do not pass go, do not collect $200. Good for him, bad for us, as the corruption in South America and Mexico continues and is even worse today than during his lifetime. You can read more about him here.

What can YOU do to stand up to the corruption in the world? Well, first and most important, you can pray. Second, you can learn more about ways you can help those who suffer under the corrupt leaders of the world. You can send money to relief efforts in those areas. You can even volunteer to help those who need our help because of the corruption in the government that puts them in peril. Ask God how to get involved, and then be brave like St Oscar Romero!

God, thanks for the inspiring example of this brave saint. St Oscar Romero, pray for us.
