this is how you store up treasure

Today we read from Luke 14:7-35 in the One Year Bible. Jesus teaches us a very important lesson, not just about humility, but about storing up treasure in heaven.

He says that when you give a banquet, don't invite a bunch of rich people (or your good friends) who can then turn around and invite you to their get together. He says if you do, that's all the reward you're gonna get. And just between you and me, that's not a bad reward from time to time. In other words, the earthly reward of having good friends and sharing a meal with them is not a bad thing.

But.

If you want to store up treasures in heaven, where you'll get to enjoy them for all of eternity... then go feed the poor. Give money to the hungry. Donate some clothes to the poorly clothed. Visit people in jail. Read a book to an elderly shut-in. Take some cookies to a nursing home. Help people who in no way can help you back.

THAT is how to store up treasure in heaven.

God, thanks for showing us how. Help us do it.
